I got to thinking of Sound of Music because friends are visiting from Manila and a group of us plan on watching the musical.
What good way is there to change the morose mood of my recent posts than to think of a happy, poignant musical set against the serene majesty of the Alps, but also the budding turbulence of a war.
The Sound of Music is a musical with music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. It is based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers.
I must have seen this movie about a dozen times. The very first was with my siblings and aunt, at the old Ever Theatre in downtown Avenida Rizal. Ever was one of the first class movie houses then, across the elegant Ideal Theatre. Odeon, another iconic movie house of Manila’s yesteryears was farther down C.M. Recto.
The songs in Sound of Music include:
- The Sound Of Music
- How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria
- Do Re Mi
- My Favorite Things
- Climb Every Mountain
- Sixteen Going on Seventeen
- The Lonely Goatherd
- How Can Love Survive
- Landler
- So Long, Farewell
- No Way to Stop It
- An Ordinary Couple
- Edelweiss
MY FAVORITE THINGS
Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittensBright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things!
Cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels
Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things!
Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eye lashes
Silver white winters that melt into spring
These are a few of my favorite things!
When the dog bites, when the bee stings
When I'm feeling sad,
I simply remember my favorite things
and then I don't feel so bad!
Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things!
One of my favorite things, is getting the wind on my face while I drive in the country. And listening to full blast music in my car, and no one says.. ssshhh. Okay, no playing "Even the Nights Are Better," but maybe "All Out of Love."

I have watched that movie over and over again, and won't ever get tired watching it! Really an epic one! Favorite: Climb Every Mountain.
